Residents told the BBC that there has been heavy fighting between government forces and Fano militants in the historic city of Gondar and other surrounding areas.
The fighting broke out in Debarak, the seat of the North Gondar zone, as well as the towns of Dabat and Amba Giorgis, and today, the residents confirmed that there was an exchange of gunfire in different areas of Gondar, the capital of Central Gondar.
Another resident, who told us that he is a medical professional at Debarak Hospital, said that the city of Debarak has been shelling all day.
On Monday, September 6, 2017, due to heavy fighting.
They told the BBC that more than 20 people were injured and taken to hospital.
Today, Tuesday, September 7, they said that the wounded are going to the hospital.
Two of the people who were receiving treatment at the hospital died immediately.
However, the medical expert pointed out that many people who were seriously injured in the conflict died without going to the hospital.
A resident, who did not allow his name to be mentioned, said that “about 15 people were buried today” in the church of Saint Michael in Debarak.
The chairman of the TPLF, Debretzion G/Michael, in his recent interview with the “New Horizon” website, expressed his understanding that his comments about the number of people killed in the war in the north have caused confusion.
In his interview, Debretzion said that the claim that 1 million people died in the war is not based on research and has no evidence.
However, Debretzion, in his explanation given on TPLF’s social media page last night, stated that genocide was committed against every family in Tigray, and said that the number of victims of the crime could be more than that.
Debretsion, who said that the crime of genocide is still continuing, accused that some individuals in our country are trying to absolve themselves from responsibility and that other parties who should be responsible for the crime of genocide are trying to avoid being questioned.
Debretsion denied that what they wanted to explain in the interview was the actions of these unnamed parties, not the number of human lives lost in the crime of genocide.
