In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Egypt, the head of security of Egypt, Abbas Kemal, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdelati, visited Asmara today and announced that they met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.
According to the ministry, the message revolves around enhancing relations between the two countries in various fields, in addition to “political and security events in the region”.
The statement mentioned that the ministers shared the views of President Isaias on the importance of peaceful maritime and international trade in the Red Sea region and the current situation and challenges in the Horn of Africa.
The minister added that Egypt and Eritrea have reached an agreement on the importance of continuing consultations for stability in Sudan and maintaining Somalia’s sovereignty over all its territories
What makes the current visit of Egypt’s foreign minister and security chief to Asmara special is that it comes after Cairo and Addis Ababa started a new dispute over the “Renaissance Dam” that Ethiopia is building on the Nile River.
Last August, the Ethiopian government announced the completion of the fifth round of water filling of the dam.
It is recalled that Egypt issued a statement against this Ethiopian action.
The Minister Al-Sisi said in his message to President Afwerki that “security incidents, the situation in Somalia and the situation in the Red Sea” were raised.
It will be remembered that Egypt, which was in conflict with Ethiopia, recently sent its troops into Somalia after its relations with Somalia were strengthened due to the port agreement signed by Ethiopia with the self-governing Somalia.
The angry Ethiopian government accused Somalia of working with outsiders to destabilize the region.
It is recalled that Ethiopia warned through its foreign minister that it will not pass this situation in silence.
