The left-wing party leader won the Sri Lankan elections

Left-wing politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won the Sri Lankan presidency after a historic run-off election.
No candidate won more than 50 percent of the total votes in the first round of elections.
In the first round of elections, Dissanayake got 42.31 percent of the votes, while his closest rival, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, got 32.76 percent.
But Dissanayake, who had promised voters good governance and tough anti-corruption measures, emerged victorious after the second election.

In the year
In 2022, Sri Lanka was plunged into its worst economic crisis after popular protests led to the ouster of the country’s leader, Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Saturday’s election is the first since the ouster of a former head of state. Dissanayake, 55, told Sri Lankans, “This victory belongs to all of us,” in a message on social media app X.
To revive the economy, Dissanayake promised to boost manufacturing, agriculture and IT sectors.

He also said he was committed to continuing the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to save Sri Lanka from economic crisis and to reduce the impact of austerity measures on low-income people. Until Saturday’s election, the winner of all eight presidential elections held in Sri Lanka since 1982 has been declared in the first round.
The current election is said to be the most competitive in the country’s history.
The Election Commission of the country announced that 17 million Sri Lankans were eligible to vote in Saturday’s election, calling it the most peaceful election in the country’s history.
