Kenyan hospital authorities have announced that Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegi’s ex-boyfriend, who set her on fire, died of his injuries.
Dixon Nydima, a marathon athlete, was on her way home from church a week ago when her ex-boyfriend doused her with petrol and killed her.
Local administrators said the two ex-lovers had been in a dispute over a small plot of land where Cheptegi lives and trains in northwest Kenya.
Nidima died on Monday night after receiving treatment in the intensive care unit for more than 30 percent of his body.
Police informed that 75 percent of her body was burnt.
Cheptegai, who was born in a Ugandan village bordering Kenya, has been living in a building in Kenya’s first city, which she has made her home and training center.
The police, on the other hand, stated that they are conducting the criminal investigation.
Cheptegai, who finished 44th in the Paris Olympics, was the winner of the 2022 competition in Thailand. Recently, there has been an increase in attacks targeting female athletes in Kenya.
Six months before this athlete’s murder, Agnes Tirop, who finished 4th in the 5000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics, was also killed in the same city, which angered many.
