Brazilian president cancels trip to Russia after suffering head injury at home

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva canceled a trip to Russia on Saturday after suffering a head injury at home.
The meeting the 78-year-old president had planned to travel to on Sunday afternoon was for the BRICS summit.
This summit is a gathering of major developing countries including Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The top hospital in the capital, Brasilia, announced that the president had advised them to temporarily avoid long-haul flights.

Instead, it is expected that he will participate in the meeting via video link. In a statement issued by the Sirio Libanos Hospital in Brasilia, the president was advised not to travel long distances.

He added that Lula suffered a laceration on the back of his head and was being monitored by doctors.

The president’s office announced that he will attend the meeting from Brazil and that his other work will continue.
The office did not release any information about the president’s injuries.
Local media quoted doctors at the hospital as saying the president was sent home on Saturday after receiving five stitches on his head.
Local media reported that they were brought to the hospital for follow-up on Sunday morning.
