Australia plans to ban children from using social media amid concerns that platforms such as Instagram and TikTok are having a negative impact on young people’s physical and mental health. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Tuesday that the government would begin testing age verification in the coming months before introducing legislation to enforce the ban.

Parents want to see their children away from their phones and playing on the field, the prime minister said, adding that it is time to say enough by taking this step. Opposition leader Peter Dutton, who is the leader of the centre-right Liberal Party, said that he supports banning social media for children under the age of 16.
