How many Ethiopians live in Lebanon?

The Ethiopian Consulate in Beirut has urged citizens to take precautionary measures following the worsening of the current situation in Lebanon and the region.

Following the tension between the Israeli forces and Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Ethiopian government announced in a press release a month ago that it had established a committee to repatriate citizens.

If the conflict worsens, the government has announced that it is ready to return up to 150,000 Ethiopian citizens to their country.

It is remembered that the current spokesperson, Ambassador Nabi Tedla, said, “whether they are legal or illegal, they must be prepared and wait. If the security situation continues to worsen, the Ethiopian government will return the illegal and legal citizens in Lebanon to their country.”

In other information, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that 160,738 foreign nationals live in Lebanon in August 2023.
119,154 of them live in urban areas.

Among the refugees:

  • 37 percent or 58,772 are Ethiopians.
  • 94 percent of Ethiopian immigrants are women;
    500 are men.

According to various numerical data, Ethiopian citizens make up the largest share of refugees in the country, and most of them are women.
