The death toll from the cholera outbreak in Sudan has reached 388.

Sudan’s Minister of Health, Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, in a press conference yesterday after an emergency meeting, said that the number of cholera victims has reached 12,896 and the death toll has risen to 388.
It is said that stagnant water can create a breeding ground for diseases.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health’s Emergency Operations Center, 401 new cases of cholera were registered in Kassala, Gadarif, North, Nile River and Red Sea regions on Saturday.

Kassala province reported three new deaths, while Northern Province reported two deaths and Nile River reported one cholera-related death.

The cholera outbreak is reported to have spread to 54 areas in 10 states.

The Emergency Operations Center added that the country’s Ministry of Health has opened 45 medical centers in eight regions and has taken various measures including continuous technical support and response to Kasala region in addition to daily monitoring.

He also promised to provide medicines and other essential items and to work in coordination with organizations working to prevent the epidemic.

The vice president of academic affairs of the university said that Hawassa University is making preparations to become autonomous next year.

Dr. Fisha Getachew, the vice president of academic affairs of the university, who pointed out that Hawassa University is one of the higher educational institutions that have been identified to be a center of research and excellence at the national level and to be self-sufficient, said that the preparatory work has been started to identify five areas in which the university will continue to work autonomously.

“Agriculture and life science, health science and medicine, physical science, social science and humanities, and teacher training are the five different sectors,” he said.

He also announced that preparations are being made to produce qualified and researched citizens in these five fields.

He said that in these areas, curriculum revision, bringing many programs together and preparing curriculum will be done.

In addition to the focus of the sectors, he stated that the infrastructure has been prepared to provide lessons digitally, to increase the collection of electronic books in the library, and to enable students to use the books wherever they are.

According to the information we received from ESA, 400 teachers have been given online training in cooperation with Arizona State University in order for teachers to have the skills to support lessons with video images.
