At least 31 people were killed in an Israeli missile attack on a building in southern Beirut yesterday, Lebanese Health Ministry Fras Abiad said.
Among the dead are said to be Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil and other unnamed commanders.
Eyewitnesses said nearby buildings shook for half an hour after the attack, CNN reported.
A CNN team in Beirut saw a frantic effort to rescue people from the rubble and rush the injured to hospital.
- Who was Akil?
The US is accused of involvement in the 1983 attack on the US embassy, which killed 63 people, and the Hezbollah bombing of the Beirut naval base, which killed 241 US soldiers.
Last year, the US State Department announced a reward of up to $7 million for information about him.
Why did Israel attack?
The Israeli army said Akil and his commanders were the masterminds of the plan to invade and capture communities in the Galilee in northern Israel and kill civilians and Israeli soldiers.
In the attack, Hizbullah’s top leader Akil was killed along with several commanders, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said.
